Sun Protection

It is well known that sun light damages the skin, contributes to skin wrinkling and aging, as well as increase the risk of skin cancer. Therefore, whenever exposure to sunlight is expected, use a good sun screen after thorough cleansing and moisturizing. (Here is more on Cleansing and Moisturizing .

Sunscreen is any substance or material that protects the skin from UV radiation. Sunscreens are available in the forms of

  • topical lotion, cream, ointment, gel, or spray that can be applied to the skin
  • a salve or stick that can be applied to the lips, nose, and eyelids
  • a moistener in towels that can be rubbed against the skin
  • sunglasses that protect the eyes
  • Film screen that can be affixed to the windows of a car, room, or office.

An ideal sunscreen should protect from sunburn, skin aging and skin cancer, but the fact is that, even the best UVA+UVB sunscreens do not provide full protection; some UV rays always manage to get through. Secondly, it is easy to accidentally rub off, wash off or sweat off much of your sunscreen . So it is better to limit your sun exposure even when you are wearing sunscreen.

While selecting a sun screen, always look at the SPF (sun protection factor) number. This indicates the degree of protection against UVB rays. For countries like United States a sun screen with SPF 15 should provide enough protection as long as it stays on the skin. While for Asian countries SPF number 60 or even 90 is sometimes recommended.

For complete sun protection follow all of the following rules.

  • Avoid the sun during high-intensity hours. The sun’s rays are most damaging from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Reduce the time you spend outdoors during these hours.
  • Wear protective clothing. Cover your skin with clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, long pants and wide-brimmed hats. Also, keep in mind that certain clothing styles and fabrics offer better protection from the sun than do others. For example, long-sleeved shirts offer better protection than short-sleeved shirts do. And tightly woven fabrics such as denim are better than loosely woven fabrics such as knits.
  • Use sunscreen. If it is inevitable to go under diret sunlight alway use a good sun screen with SPF 15 or higher. (SPF- Sun Protection Factor) In warmer areas even SPF 60 or 90 is required. However, before applying any sunscreen lotion make sure that it suits your skin.

Make Your Skin Perfect

Great skin is the first step toward an excellent makeup. Skin plays a vital role in our life, how one looks and feels directly correlates to ones skin.

Partaking in health and beauty rituals indiscriminately – slowing time and gravity’s tentacles continues to lead us on a trail that has been philosophised throughout history. Beauty comes from within, for the beauty that is without resembles the beauty that is within.

Making the best choices for our bodies, and ultimately our skin, is achieved through diet/ food, exercise, regular professional treatments, personalized homecare, and a healthy mental attitude.

The type of skin you have depends on your genes, sex, age, environment, structure and regeneration. How you treat your skin will always be evident in your face, hands and body. Its never too early nor too late to begin looking after your skin.

Skin cleansing is essential: pollution, grease and grime cling to the skin, clogging pores; while the body eliminates toxins through perspiration. If the cleansing process is not thoroughly undertaken, the skin will look and feel sluggish, tired and minor skin problems and irritations will transpire.

Cleansing should be part of the daily routine: upon waking, and before returning to bed; before using special treatments (masks); before and after makeup; and after sport (to wash away perspiration and grime that builds up), all without disturbing the skins natural acidity. The acid mantle (or pH) valiantly guards the skin against bacterial invasion and other disturbances; warding off moisture loss, leaving the skin smooth, fine and blemish free.

Basic Steps Of Cleansing

Cleansing is the first essential step in your daily skin care routine.

Cleansing the face 2-3 times a day; is adequate for normal skin. If your skin is oily a more frequent cleansing i.e. 4-5 times a day is necessary. If your skin is dry it is best to avoid frequent washing and you may have to use a suitable oil-based cosmetic cleanser instead of soap, which has a dry effect.

There are several alternatives to soap and water cleansing. Cleansers can be in the form of creams, milks, lotions, gels and liquids. All are, a mixture of oil, wax and water which have been formulated to suit different skin types. A cotton -pad dipped in fresh milk available at home, is an equally effective cleanser.

The right way to apply cleansers and creams on your face is in an upward and outward movement. The skin should not be stretched, dragged or pulled. Leave the cleanser on for a minute or two so as to loosen the dirt and make up. Remove it either using a cotton wool or with a tissue paper, again using an upward and out ward movement. Finally rinse with water.

Masks

Basically all face maskes have some sort of a cleansing action. Various ingredients are used in the masks, depending on the skin type. Clay, form an important constituent of many face masks. They help to remove dirt, sebum, and dead skin so that the skin looks clean, soft and youthful.

Fullers earth is a special type of clay often used in face packs. It contains aluminium silicate. As it dries on the skin, it absorbs the superficial dead cells and blots up any excessive oil on the skin. It is therefore excellent for an oily skin but should not be used on dry skin. Kaolin is also a fine clay which has been used for tummy upsets because it absorbs toxins from the system. It removes grime, oils and dead cells. Kaolin is also best for oily skin and best avoided for dry skin.

Another ingredient of some of the masks is the peeling or the exfoliating agent-these remove the top layer of dead cells from the skin, leaving behind fresh youthful skin. Oatmeal and bran are the commonly used peelers. Oatmeal is obtained from oats which is rich in Vitamin B and Vitamin E

Also added to many masks are natural ingredients-cucumbers, curds, lemon juice and Brewer’s Yeast. It restores the acid / alkali balance of the skin.

Beauty Secrets

Skin plays a vital role in everyone’s life that how one looks and feels, is directly related to one skin. Great skin is the first step towards an excellent makeup also. As far as your daily diet is concerned, track these three secrets in your routine to have a glowing and sensuous skin.

  1. Avoid eating chocolates and foods or drinks that are made with cocoa combination. There is a link between chocolate and skin conditions such as pimples.
  2. Avoid fried and fatty foods in general.
  3. Avoid starchy foods. No cakes, biscuits, sweets, bread or Jams.
The first and foremost step towards beautiful skin is working out what your skin type is. This is necessary, so that you can move forward how to care for your skin, and what products should be used. Below are the 5 different features of skin types, which you can compare to your own skin type. Once you have decided what type your skin is, you can find out what the best way is to look after your skin.
  1. Dry skin
  2. Oily skin
  3. Combinational skin
  4. Sensitive skin
  5. Normal skin
Care for Dry skin:
  • For dry skin, use a creamy cleanser to melt away dirt. Leave it on your skin before sweeping it away with cotton wool. Splash cold water onto your face to clean and refresh your skin. Use a thick cream moisturizer to seal in as much moisture as possible and have a refreshing feel.
Care for Oily skin:
  • To care for oily skin you should start with a gentle, foaming facial wash. This will remove dirt and oil without stripping away moisture. Soak cotton wool in a gentle astringent lotion and sweep it over your skin to refresh and cool it.
  • Even oily skin needs a moisturizer, but choose a light, watery fluid; this will be enough for your skin. Allow the moisturizer to sink in well and then absorb the excess with a tissue to prevent shine.
Care for Combinational skin:
  • If you have combinational skin use a foaming facial wash in the mornings to cleanse your skin. This will keep the oily areas clean to prevent blackheads. In the evening use a cream cleanser to soothe your dry areas. This will keep a balance between excess dryness and excess oiliness. Use a strong astringent for your oily areas and a mild skin freshener for the dry areas. This is not an expensive option, as you will need a little of each. Use moisturizer on your whole face, but make sure you concentrate on your drier areas.
Care for Sensitive Skin:
  • If you have sensitive skin, do not use facial washes or soap; instead use a light, hypoallergenic cleansing lotion. Use a moisturizer to strengthen your skin and provide a barrier against irritants. Make sure you use an non perfumed moisturizer, which will not irritate your skin.
Care for Normal Skin:

To care for normal skin you should start with a gentle foaming facial wash. Massaging it into your face will give you a rosy complexion. Cool your skin with a refreshing toner, and massage it with your fingers in light upward strokes

Best Skin Care Tips For Teens

Being a teen in today’s world brings many pressures from society to look good. The media is full of beautiful faces that add to the stress of growing up. Don’t let that undermine your self-confidence!

What’s a girl to do? There are many ways to enhance your natural beauty and keep a practical skin care and make-up routine. These tips will help bring out the best in you, but remember, good posture and a smile give a great first impression.

Skin Care Tips

Teenagers have different skin care and make-up needs than mature women. At what age should a teen begin a skin care regimen? Skin care should actually start when they are preteens, as early as the age of 10 or 11. Hormones start to kick in and blemishes may begin to appear.

As you mature, your skin care needs will change, as your skin does. Pay special attention to what products you are using and if there are any undesirable affects taking place. What makes your skin look radiant one month may cause blemishes and break-outs the next.

  • Moisturizer

At an early age, a light moisturizer may be called for — but do not use heavy creams made for dry skin. Choose a product that is formulated for light skin care maintenance and does not block your pores.

A heavy moisturizer will probably wreak havoc and cause pimples. Try using a light moisturizer only once a day, before bedtime. Any more often than that is probably be overdoing it.

  • Pimples and Blemishes

Acne is a #1 skin care concern for teens. Keep your face and hair clean, wash your hands frequently, and keep them away from your face. There are many products available on the market today for acne prevention and cures, and they are much more effective than years ago.

Once you begin experiencing problems, take action to avoid lifetime scarring. You can go to the Blemishes Page to find out how to get rid of pimples, preventative maintenance and how to reduce the appearance of blemishes once they appear.

Make-up for Teenagers

Most teenage girls begin wearing light make-up around the ages of 12-13 as they become more aware of their appearance. As a teen, your make-up should look natural and enhance your facial features. Don’t overdo it, this will only make you look silly. With a few simple, inexpensive products, you can play up your finest features — and look great!

Keep your make-up light for school. You don’t need to use make-up on every facial feature you have! Mix and match to find out what looks best on you.

For parties, you may want to add a little more make-up to enhance your features. Make sure you blend it in well with your fingers or a cosmetics brush and check it in bright light when you’re finished.

  • Foundation

Foundation for teens is not necessary. While it can clog your pores, it will also look overdone. Skip the foundation and use a concealer on your blemishes only. Lightly dust on some loose powder over your entire face to even out your skin tone, control oil, and set the concealer.

  • Freckles

Don’t try to hide your freckles. You may not appreciate them, but they are part of you. Exposure to sunlight makes freckles darker so avoiding the sun and using a sunscreen will keep them in check. As you get older, they can fade — and then they won’t be an issue.

  • Eye Make-up

You may not be interested in eye shadow until you’re a little older. If so, that’s great. When you do begin wearing it, keep it light and use any trendy metallics and sparkles sparingly. They can flake off into your eyes and cause irritation. Eye shadow does not have to match your eyes, however earth tones (tan, brown, gray) are very complimentary to blue, brown and hazel eyes.

When you begin using mascara, brown works best for both blondes and brunettes. Black is probably too harsh, especially in the daytime. If you think brown isn’t dark enough, try brownish-black.

Waterproof mascara may be necessary for sports and outdoor activities in warm weather. It stays on longer and doesn’t run — but it’s harder to take off. It’s best to keep make-up to a minimum and you won’t have to worry about undesired smearing.

If you’re going to use an eyeliner, a pencil liner looks more natural than liquid liner. Learn to apply it with a steady hand for straight lines, and blot it with a tissue if you get it on too dark.

  • Blush

Liquid and stick blush are popular choices for teens because they glide on smoothly and blend in well. Pinks and peaches compliment almost any skin tone. Apply to the apple of your cheeks and blend outwards, towards your hairline.

  • Lips

For luscious lips, lip gloss does the trick. If you want to add some color to your lips for a nighttime look, try a lipstick in a sheer color. For extra shine, put the lip gloss on over your lipstick. Always have lip balm handy for chapped lips.

Ways To Remove Unwanted Facial Hair

Unwanted facial hair has been a growing concern among women for a long time now. A smooth and silky hairless face is a dream of every woman that can maximize the beauty and appeal of their appearance. Moreover, facial hair has been a universal problem for transsexual women, which is also supposed to be one of the most difficult problems to solve. To combat these problems a number of methods have come to facilitate facial hair removal. Given below are some of the most common facial hair removal methods.

Application of Depilatory creams, lotions and gels

Using depilatory gels, lotions and creams for facial hair removal is one of the common and popular methods. The structure of the facial hair is altered by the chemical substance present in these creams and lotions to facilitate the removal of the hair. It is crucial to ensure the quality of the cream or the lotion before applying it on the facial skin because the chemical used in them can cause irritation to the skin. Therefore, use only those products that are specifically formulated for facial applications. It is recommended to perform a test on a small area of the facial skin to check how your skin reacts to the chemical and then apply it. Always follow the directions of use for preventing chemical burns or irritation.

Waxing

Waxing can be very effective for removing unwanted facial hair. If you choose to opt for waxing, consider doing it every 4 to 6 weeks. Before using the wax test a small area of the facial skin to detect allergic reaction. Never apply wax on irritated or sunburned skin.

Electrolysis

Electrolysis is considered to be one of the most popular and effective methods of permanent hair removal. This method uses electric current to destroy the hair roots permanently. However, electrolysis may require several treatments over a period of time to follow, as each hair follicle needs to be destroyed individually.

Laser

Permanent Facial hair removal through laser needs to be done specifically by a licensed professional. Although time-consuming and expensive, laser treatments may not be a permanent solution for removing unwanted facial hair. Depending on the thickness of your facial hair and skin type it is best to consult a professional before opting for a Laser treatment.

Shaving

Although shaving is adopted as one of the easiest and quickest solution to remove facial hair, it is not recommended for women, as the hair tends to come back very rapidly. Moreover, the use of razor may not be ideal on the sensitive facial skin, which might lead to irritation or other skin problems.

Tweezing

Tweezing involves the plucking out of the unwanted facial hair from the root. Although it takes a longer time for the hair to grow back after tweezing, it can be painful at times to pluck out the hair. However, tweezing is preferred over shaving.

Tips

  • Consider using a lotion that contains alpha-hydroxy acid after using any of the above mentioned facial hair removal treatments to exfoliate skin, which prevents ingrown hairs.
  • If none of the methods seem to be effective, bleach the hair for an easy and safe way to conceal unwanted facial hair.

Take Proper Skin Care In Winter

The chilling cold in the air from the sudden change of seasons can leave your skin chapped and devastatingly dry. Winter atmosphere is notorious for scarcity of humidity, compounded by indoor heating which is winter’s most vicious skin-drying scoundrel.

Winter often spells disaster for your skin. It looks rough and chapped, feels tight and drawn. What should be one of your greatest assets becomes one of your biggest beauty problems. You have to take extra care for your skin during this season and with our tips you will find that having a beautiful skin is not that difficult after all.

Your mission: remove less oil and moisture, and add extra oil and moisture as needed.

  • Keep your whole body hydrated. Drink approximately 64 ounces or more of water daily. Limit the amount of caffeine and alcohol you intake; these act as diuretics releasing fluid from the body.
  • Protect your skin from sun damage. Apply sunblock, preferably SPF 25 or higher, as a part of your daily skin care routine all year long. Remember to apply to all parts of your body that will be exposed during the day: face, arms, neck, etc.
  • Take warm-not hot showers or baths or at least reduce the amount of time. While this may not seem best during the cold winters it will actually help prevent the amount of natural acid mantel that is stripped off by the hot water which leads to dry skin. A soak in a warm bath amply infused with sweet almond or jojoba oil would be a soothing and skin-nourishing way to end the day.
  • Ditch your usual soap and use an emollient-rich beauty bar, such as Dove or Oil of Olay. Cleanse gently and don’t soap up dry parts such as legs and arms.
  • Smooth on body oil or lotion as soon as you get out of the shower, to trap in the shower’s moisture. Apply petroleum jelly on problem areas to seal in moisture and heal very dry skin. This includes your face — petroleum jelly is noncomedogenic (it won’t clog your pores) and very soothing.

Avoid Wrinkle Around The Eyes

The eyes are the window to the soul, and the skin around them is no exception. That is why it is easy to tell a person’s age by how wrinkled or bright the skin around their eyes looks. There are many reasons for wrinkle development – the sun, the wind, and even the cold can all cause wrinkle formation. A person’s genetics also plays a role in how wrinkles form, an anti wrinkle eye cream may be a good option to consider treating the development of lines and wrinkles if it’s too late for you to prevent them completely.

Skin can also be strengthened with natural extracts like algae, which encourage new tissue to grow and revs up the natural skin cells. A product with multiple natural ingredients is a good place to start, and is also a product that will be more gentle on your skin.

The best formulation to look for is the nano-lipid form, which permeates through the skin instead of laying on it, which will do little to achieve the effect you’re looking for. Anti wrinkle eye creams containing CoQ10 help to firm up and regenerate the skin around the eyes by combating free radicals and slowing the oxidation of cells. Skin hydration also helps improve the appearance of wrinkles, and the creams with the best results use plant-based oils such as Babassu oil or orange essential oil to moisturize.

There are some ingredients to stay away from when looking for an anti wrinkle eye cream, however. Your skin can get dried out from Parabens, which can lead to disease. Pores can get clogged from mineral oils, and this can stop your skin from being hydrated and refreshing itself.

Even synthetic fragrances, which are a pleasant-smelling touch but not necessary, have been found to be cancer causing. Be sure to avoid these ingredients, and stick instead to natural ones that haven’t been tested on animals.

You can amp up the results you get by drinking a lot of water, and maintaining a healthy diet and a consistent exercise program. Be sure to invest in a good sunscreen, too. The right one provides protection against all kinds of UV rays and helps reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles. Large, dark sunglasses can also help reduce crow’s feet, and hey, they look good too!

Do your research into the available products, and make sure what you’re reading is from credible sources, like a dermatologist or medical professional. Compare the ingredients, and be sure to look for CoQ10, or Coenzyme 10, a key antioxidant that helps heal skin tissue and aids with hydration.

Inform yourself before you shop. Pick a product with natural ingredients, one that will support the soft skin around your eyes and refresh your skin. The best anti wrinkle eye cream for you is one that works with your body- not one that harms it.

Lips Care In Winter

Lips tend to dry out the fastest at this time of year. Be sure to keep them covered with a good lip balm applied several times during the day. Warm sesame oil will also soothe your lips . Avoid licking your lips and don’t bite the skin on the surface of your lips. The skin will never have a chance to heal if you chew on it. This is a hard habit to break but well worth the effort. Lip balms are now commonly available with an SPF factor as well to protect them from the harmful rays.

Whitening Tips And Tricks

Dark spots, and freckles, and skin-damage – oh my! Looking to lighten your complexion? Every shade of skin is beautiful, but as we grow older our skin tone can change. Freckles may appear, dark spots can arise, and skin may not be as light as it once was. So, if you’re still not ready to embrace your dark side, read on for a few natural whitening tips and tricks.

Use Sunblock
One of the easiest ways to stay fair is to use sunblock on a daily basis. Find a moisturizer that includes an SPF of 15 or higher and use it every morning after washing your face. Sunblock not only prevents your skin from getting darker, but also blocks harmful UV rays that can cause cancer and premature aging. Remember your hands when applying sunblock, as they are a prime area for age spots.

Exfoliate
Exfoliating once a week will remove dead skin cells to lighten and brighten your skin. Mix two tablespoons oatmeal and two tablespoons brown sugar with a quarter cup of milk, and stir until a paste forms. Gently scrub your face, rinse, and moisturize.

Make a Mask
A homemade mask is a great way to lighten your skin and a good excuse to kick back on the couch. Try using one once a week. Use one tablespoon of each of the following: sandalwood paste, lemon juice, tomato juice, and cucumber juice. Mix them all together to form a paste. Spread the mixture on your face and wait until it dries. Rinse and moisturize for a natural glow.

Licorice Extract
Licorice extract contains glabridin, a component that acts as a natural skin whitener. Apply a thin layer of the extract morning and evening, after you wash your face and before you moisturize. Licorice extract can be found at any health food store or ordered online. Be sure to store the bottle in a cool, dark place to maintain freshness. Note: test a small amount on the back of your arm before using on your face to be sure you do not have an allergic reaction.

Remember to love your skin no matter what color it is. It’s a part of who you are and that’s what makes you beautiful and unique.

Attractive Lips

One of the most common reasons for lips to feel dry is when they’re being exposed to extremes of temperature, whether this is hot or cold. The lips may crack and feel very uncomfortable. Using a lip balm regularly throughout the day will help.

Moderate degrees of dehydration will also cause lip dryness. Drinking too much caffeine or alcohol can often be responsible. The solution when this is the case is to remember to drink plenty of non-alcoholic liquid throughout the day. Eight glasses of water each day is the recommended minimum. This needs to be increased during hot weather.

One of the things that many people do when their lips feel dry is to keep licking them in an effort to moisturize the lips. In most cases, however, this doesn’t solve the problem but makes matters worse. So try not to do this.

Eat a well balanced diet, include moderate exercise in your daily routine such as walking, protect your lips from the elements and you will never have another dry lip day.

Shape The Eyebrow

The eyebrow experts say never, never to pluck your eyebrows from above, but always to pluck from the bottom of the brow.

Eyebrow plucking tips to help you achieve beautiful eyebrows. The perfect eyebrow starts above the inside corner of your eye (over the tear duct), and ends at the outside corner, above your eyelashes. Eyebrow plucking is an art. Plucking can make your eyes look larger and give your face a clean, polished look.

Eyebrow plucking tips to help you achieve beautiful eyebrows. Eyebrow plucking should ideally be timed just before hitting the sack as the sleep time that follows allows any subsequent redness to disappear overnight. Slant edge tweezers, which grip hairs easily, are best for shaping brows while combing hairs one way, then the other, helps remove loose strands. When plucking, pluck the stray hair underneath the eyebrow – not above the eyebrow.

Eyebrow Plucking

Plucking Eyebrow Tips :

Sit near a window to get the best light.

Use a pair of angled eyebrow tweezers to pluck the hairs below the brow; never shape your brow by plucking above it. Pluck only one hair at a time.

A tweezer with a pointed or slanted tip will grip the hairs best.

Be careful to pull the hair, not the skin when tweezing. While its easy to accidentally grab the skin, doing so may result in redness or bleeding. If redness does occur, rinse your face with cold water and apply a cold eye mask to soothe the flushed skin.

Always pluck below the brow line, so the hair coming back will follow the natural arch of your brow.

Wash the area thoroughly so it’s not oily.

Afterwards use a cotton ball or pad soaked in pure tea tree oil or witch hazel to soothe your plucked brows.

There are tweezers on the market that are specially designed for plucking eyebrows. They cost a bit more but make the experience less painful.

Moisturizers For Different Skin Types

Oily Skin:

The moisturizers for patients with oily skin should be non-comedogenic or oil-free.

Dry Skin:

There are a small percentage of people who actually have dry skin on their face, these people will be dry on the cheeks and jawline. Many of these patients work outside in rough elements, and many of these people are over 50 years of age. For these patients a creamy moisturizer in a lotion or cream is very effective. If they do not have sensitive skin, they can wear whatever products feels good.

The reason for the paucity of dry skin on the face, is that there is an abundance of sebaceous glands on the face to prevent dryness. These are particularly active in young people, in men, and in many normal women. If a person is scaly in the center of the face central forehead, around the nose, and on the central chin, this may be seborrheic dermatitis. The use of a heavy moisturizer in people who have central facial dandruff (seborrheic dermatitis) could lead to acne.

Normal – Combination Skin:

Most people have oily skin on the forehead, nose, and chin (called th T-zone), and dryer skin on the cheeks and neck. When the humidity is low, it may be necessary to moisturize the face. The most prudent of patients ,male or female, will select a non-comedogenic moisturizer which contains a minimum SPF of 15 in it for daily use. There are legions of such products reasonably priced, which will prevent cancer and photoaging.

Moisturizers – Body Skin:

Because there are very few sebaceous (oil) glands on the arms and legs, moisturizers are very important. Winter, dry climates, and windy climates are very hard on the skin of the body. Many body lotions incorporate sunblocks for a daily routine. This is very important for sun exposed skin.

Often heavy moisturizers such as petrolatum Aquaphor, Cetaphil cream, Neutrogena Norwegian Formula, and other Jar or tube moisturizers are needed for dry climates. What may be appropriate for facial skin may be too thin for the arms, legs, hands, and feet.
